HARLINGEN MEDICAL CENTER RECEIVES 9TH STRAIGHT “A” GRADE FOR PATIENT SAFETY

HMC is only hospital in Cameron County to receive “A” grade  from the Leapfrog Group; top grades show consistency  in providing high levels of care for Valley patients

Harlingen, TX, Nov. 2025 – Harlingen Medical Center has received its 9th straight “A”  Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, for the fall of 2025.  This national distinction recognizes Harlingen Medical as being among the top hospitals in the nation in protecting patients from preventable harm and errors.

The latest award means that Harlingen Medical Center (HMC) has received “straight A’s” for patient safety for four and a half years in a row -- since the fall of 2021.  This demonstrates HMC’s commitment to consistently deliver the best care possible to patients of the Rio Grande Valley.

Harlingen Medical Center, a member of the Prime Healthcare, is the only hospital in Cameron County to receive the “A” grade for patient safety for the fall of 2025 – and the only hospital in Cameron Couty which has consistently received the “A” grade over the past four years.

“We are honored to have earned a grade A on Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Score nine times in a row,” said Todd Mann, CEO of Harlingen Medical Center. ““This recognition reflects the steadfast dedication of our team and our ongoing commitment to deliver consistent, exceptional care to the patients and communities we serve.”

Mr. Mann added that the hospital’s multiple awards are a testament to the work of physicians, 5501 S. Expressway 77 | Harlingen, TX   78550 | (956) 365-1000 | Fax (956) 365-1875 nurses and other healthcare professionals who are committed to providing compassionate care and the  “pursuit of patient-centered excellence in all that we do.”

The Leapfrog Group, a non-profit, independent national organization, assigns a grade of “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” to general hospitals across the country – using evidence-based measures of patient safety which are focused on preventing errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

“Earning an ‘A’ Grade means Harlingen Medical Center made a true commitment to put patient safety first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, board, clinicians, staff and volunteers that all had a role to play in this achievement.”

Dr. Padmini Bhadriraju, Chief Medical Officer for Prime Healthcare hospitals in the Rio Grande Valley, including Harlingen Medical Center, expressed thanks to “every single individual working in our healthcare system who made these awards possible.”

“What it means for you and your family is that when you come into our doors, we provide you with excellent care, a very safe environment for the patient, and excellence in every service we provide,” Dr. Bhadriraju added.

Harlingen Medical Center’s sister hospitals in Prime Healthcare, Mission Regional Medical Center and Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, also received an “A” grade for patient safety.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries, which kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. The Leapfrog program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
