About Us

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Coastal Studies Laboratory (CSL), established in 1973, is located on South Padre Island within Isla Blanca Park. Dedicated to education, research, public service, and community outreach, the CSL focuses on coastal and marine concerns in the Gulf of Mexico, with special emphasis on the South Texas region.

Serving as both an aquarium and museum, the CSL offers visitors the chance to explore the diverse marine habitats of the Laguna Madre and the Gulf. Guests can experience live exhibits of native marine species, as well as view an extensive collection of hundreds of shells and other specimens gathered from Gulf shores. These exhibits provide hands-on opportunities for learning and discovery, making the CSL a valuable educational resource for students, families, and the general public.

In addition to public exhibits, the CSL supports research and field studies that advance understanding of coastal ecosystems and marine life. Community outreach and educational programs extend the lab’s impact beyond its walls, inspiring awareness and stewardship of South Texas’ unique coastal environment.

The CSL is open to the public free of charge and features a gift shop with marine-themed souvenirs. By blending education, science, and community engagement, the Coastal Studies Laboratory continues to be a cornerstone of marine exploration and coastal conservation for the region.
